The latest trend in dentistry is to remove as little of the natural tooth in order to achieve a certain goal.Examples of this treatment includes tooth fracture, congenitally misformed teeth ,slight alignment problems and badly discoloured teeth. The fact that modern composites can be bonded directly to tooth enamel makes this possible, often without local anaesthetic.

What does minimal invasive dentistry mean to you as a patient?
This modern type of dentistry is practiced by few dentists and was developed to make dentistry a more pleasant experience..Minimal invasive dentistry originated from the need to provide dental care at a lower cost to patients who have limited funds and does not want to be limited to what the government facilities can offer.Today minimal invasive dentistry has been developed to such an extent that it can be applied to everyone!!
Minimal invasive dentistry is mainly possible because of the major advances in modern dental materials. In the past, dental resin materials were far inferior to what is available today.Mainly because modern resins or so called composites are extremely hard, resistant to discolorations and abrasion. What makes modern composites more acceptable today is like,in the past, these materials was the cause of sensitivity and discomfort due to the shrinkage of these materials after a filling was placed. This is no longer an issue due to less shrinkage after the curing process.
Minimal invasive dentistry is possible because these materials can be directly bonded onto the enamel of the tooth and can be shaped to any form. This allows the dentist to perform certain procedures that was not possible in the past.
Minimal invasive dentistry is especially popular with children. To protect the permanent teeth from decay ,a procedure is done whereby a flowable composite is used to seal the pits and fissures of the permanent molars. This procedure is non invasive and has proven to be extremely effective in preventing decay.
With congenitally absent teeth in , minimally invasive dentistry is very successful to close the gap until an implant can be placed at a later stage.
Where a tooth is misshaped ,minimal invasive dentistry is the ideal way to correct this aesthetic problem in children and adults, mostly without the need for anaesthetics!!
Orthodontic treatment is usually necessary where teeth is misaligned. With minor misaligned teeth,it is possible to correct this with minimal invasive dentistry with permanent and excellent end results.
Discoloured teeth due to medication or the loss of vitality because of an accident ,can be easily aesthetically restored with either internal or external bleaching and/or minimal invasive dentistry.
Teeth that had the nerve removed(endodontics) often discolours over time, and minimal invasive dentistry can correct this problem without the need for expensive procedures like porcelain crowns.
If a tooth has to be removed ,because it cannot be restored, it is possible to replace this tooth as an immediate procedure through minimal invasive dentistry.
